Perdiz hunting vacations

In the afternoons we alternate between hunting Perdiz over a variety of upland bird hunting dogs (two hunters per dog), or more duck hunting. A ½ day of Perdiz hunting typically yields 20 to 25 flushes of birds per dog—limit ten Perdiz per hunter.

Perdiz hunting in Argentina is not a high volume affair. If you do not limit, you have not failed. Most hunters shoot between six and eight birds each per afternoon. All of the birds are wild. Perdiz are partridges that are not covey birds, so expect to shoot them in singles and pairs. Often, the birds hold so tight that they flush right between the hunter and the dog. This requires patience on the part of the hunter not to pull the trigger too soon—but if you do—and miss—you still have three more shells left in the gun, assuming that you are hunting with one of our Benellis. Benelli m2 shotguns are the standard at all of our Argentina hunting lodges. The new Comfort-Tech system takes away the only downside of the older models, the recoil.

If you are a member of the 16 gauge society, then a Perdiz hunting trip should be right down your alley. We would say that the 16 gauge is one of the best upland hunting shotguns for the hunting the Perdiz—a bird that in the Lesser Tinamou variety, is just a little bigger than a bobwhite quail.

However, hunters occasionally jump their larger brethren, the Colorado and the Martineta. These highly similar, but larger birds are the size of a sharptail grouse, and the extra help of a 16 ga. or the brute force of a 12 ga. really comes in handy.

Sufficiently large enough for the lesser species of Perdiz, the 20 ga. is also a popular choice for many shooters. We even have a few clients that like to shoot them with a 28 gauge, although it is uncommon. If you choose to hunt our Perdiz with any caliber other than a 12 or a 20, please contact us in advance to discuss shotgun shell arrangements.

We hunt the Perdiz in pastures and grasslands, and the walking is very easy. Anyone who can carry a gun on a three to four mile walk can enjoy Perdiz hunting. There are no thorns, cacti, or snakes to contend with—but tucking your pants into a good pair of upland hunting boots will keep the cockleburs off of your socks.
As you are probably accustomed to from hunting with quail hunting outfitters, we only put two shooters, one guide, and one dog per rig, so the two shooters take turns on point. Other hunters are nowhere nearby. Thus there is no law here requiring the use of blaze orange clothing, however it always makes good safety sense to at least wear an orange hat.
